Research Fellow on AI & Data Science

University of Exeter

Mayra is a Research Fellow at the Centre for Net+ Health & Climate Solutions specialising in the application of AI and data science to environmental & health applications.

She has a multidisciplinary background in water systems, spanning marine applications, hydrological modelling, water quality assessment, and climate resilience. Her doctoral research at the QUEX Institute (University of Exeter & University of Queensland) used numerical modelling and machine learning to assess climate resilience in water systems. As a postdoctoral researcher at Eawag (ETH Domain), she applied deep learning to forecast sewage spills, while also serving as a scientific assistant to the Directorate. At PML, her work focused on using remote sensing products and machine learning for marine applications, contributing to projects such as ESA SCOPE, ESA TIME, and the Simons Foundation CBIOMES.

May is proficient in Python, GIS, and the usage of high-performance computing for modelling applications, with additional industry experience as an engineer. She has contributed to teaching at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels and actively participates in outreach.
