John is a senior public health physician and epidemiologist with a broad range of interests. As Director of Health Improvement at Public Health England (PHE) until it was abolished in 2021, he was responsible for the information, intelligence and research functions of PHE and its national health improvement functions. He has led England’s contribution to reporting the internationally acclaimed Global Burden of Disease project since 2015. He has been part time Professor of public health and epidemiology at the University of Exeter since 2021. He also works for the French national public health agency and acts as an expert witness in epidemiology.
