Hywel is Professor of Environmental Data Science at the University of Exeter. His research uses computational methods (AI & data science) to address challenges around sustainability and environmental change. He is part of the Department of Computer Science at University of Exeter, where he leads a research group that uses machine learning, large language models and computer vision to analyse environmental data in various domains, including climate change, conservation/biodiversity and Earth observation. Previously he has worked in the intersection between computational and social sciences, studying the Web and social media, especially around climate politics and online debates. Hywel enjoys collaboration and try to achieve research impact by working with external organisations.
